Mrs. Julia Haugse Rites to be Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Haugse, 88-year-old pioneer who came to this section of the United States before South Dakota became a state, will be held in the Miller funeral chapel at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon with Rev. Andrew C. Anderson, assistant pastor at the First Lutheran church, officiating.  Second services will be held in the Lutheran church at Colton SD at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. Anderson also officiating there. Burial will be at Colton.

Mrs. Haugse was a Gol dStar mother, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Lutheran church.

Born in Telemarken, Norway, she came to the United States in 1866 and settled in Winneshiek county, Iowa, near decorah, where she was married to Ole O. Haugse in 1876.

In 1878 Mr. Haugse walked 300 miles to come to Dakota Territory, filing a claim in what is now Grand Meadow township, south of COlton.  Later Mrs. Haugse joined him there and the family continued to occupy the homestead until Mr. Haugse retired, whereupon they moved to Sioux Falls.  He died May 3, 1934 and Mrs. Haugse edied Wednesday afternoon at home ...
